To celebrate Matariki 2017 Philip Brownlee and I reworked our composition ‘Ko te tātai whetū’ into this chamber music version.
I performed it with Alistair Fraser and members of Stroma at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington. It is now available on the SOUNZ website. The lyrics are from a southern mōteatea that my Poua, Teone Taare Tikao wrote down and gave to scholar, Herries Beattie. It tells the story of Hinetītama and Tāne, and lists many star and constellation names. An appropriate piece for this time of the year, where we celebrate the beginning of a new year, by our traditional Māori Māramataka, or lunar calendar.
